Timeline for School Board Candidates and Elections in New York State

January - March - Be thinking about the reasons why you are interested in considering running for your local school board. You should attend some Board of Education meetings to gather information about the issues the Board is dealing with and the make-up of the Board.

January - March - Find out which current Board members terms are expiring and if possible, if they are planning to run for another term.

February - April - Circulate petitions up to 30 days prior to School Board Elections held the 3rd Tuesday of May. Petition forms can be secured from the District Clerk of the School District. The number of signatures required can also be secured from the District Clerk. We recommend securing more than the minimum required signatures in case there is a problem with any signatures.

No later than 30 days prior to the election turn in signed petitions to the District Clerk.

All school districts have 5, 7, or 9 members. Terms may be either 3 or 5 years long and are staggered to provide for continuity.

In preparation for the election prepare a written, well thought out paper on your reasons why you are interested in serving on the Board and why you would make a good Board member.

Develop a strategy for promoting your campaign. This may include: preparing for an appearance on Candidate’s Night, if your district holds one, printing and distributing flyers, posters, mailing etc.

Talk to people about your candidacy and ask them to vote for you and to encourage others to vote for you as well.

TLI Inc. is committed to helping people with Judeo-Christian ethics and morals consider becoming a candidate for their local school board. We can help in many ways including possible financial assistance.
